I'm quite sympathetic with how maddening it must be to have no-shows, and believe people who behave so inconsiderately deserve a good shin kick. On the other hand, electronic reservation systems work a charm in NYC, so I don't see why Paris restaurants have been so slow on the uptake. And re door stepping, that's fine if you live locally and have the time, but not really practical for most people. Cheers, Alec

In relation to the difficulties surrounding reserving, I sympathize massively BUT this is a two sided equation. Not all of our treasured clients 'show' for their reservations, remember to cancel when they can not make it etc. The booking with no risk of financial loss formula – unlike the theatre or easyjet – has perhaps encouraged some restaurant goers to make multiple bookings & then see how they feel, depriving others of tables in the process. Ask any restaurant, you will be shoqué !

As for the French not answering the telephone, it is unquestionably partly attitude but also I think a way of dealing with dumb employment legislation, working with smaller teams of people & more machines. Most of the restaurants that do this are small & simply maintain their regular client base by making it a bit more difficult for others. Door stepping is a good solution.
